Sandwich Terns

The Sandwich Tern has a black bill with a yellow/orange tip. It has short black legs with gray upper wings. It has a small, shaggy crest on the back of its head. I found several of these birds on a shoal in the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. If I understand their range correctly these birds are passing through on the way to Florida, Texas and other points south for wintering. They’ll return to the southeastern US in the spring to nest.
