Hi I’m Bob Decker, an award-winning professional photographer making my home along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast. MeWhile while I used to earn part of my living via wedding and portrait photography, the last few years I’ve been pursuing my passion of creating nature, wildlife, travel and adventure photos. My outdoors images and articles have appeared in a variety of local, regional and national publications. A former member of the Carolinas Nature Photography Association, I would encourage anyone living in or near the Carolinas with an interest in nature photography to join. I’m also a past member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

I’ve always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family hiking trips I’d often go hiking where I’d allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind that hill, or awaits further down the river. It’s been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: “To boldly go…” My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire for adventure and drive to explore the natural world that surrounds us. It is my belief that my fine art photography comes from the perspective of someone connected to nature, rather than that of a casual observer.

Be sure to check out my blog.  In my personal quest to learn about hiking, wildlife photography and other outdoors opportunities in and around North Carolina’s Crystal Coast I sometimes encountered information that was lacking, misleading, or simply wrong.  I thought it might be helpful to others to develop an online resource with descriptions of area trails and recreational areas as well as to share my adventures, discoveries, thoughts and reports of my wildlife and bird sightings.  As a professional photographer I’ll also use this site to share some of my nature, wildlife and landscape imagery.  I’ll even write a bit about what went into making some of the images or some information about the subjects in them.

Of course the images you see here are available to purchase as fine art prints or for use as stock images. There is a nice selection of images in my portfolio area that includes a shopping cart for purchasing prints… even matted and framed if you’d like. If you see an image outside of the portfolio that you’re interested in simply drop me an email and we can work out the details for you.

Thank you so much for stopping by. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Artist Statement

It has been said that a photograph always tells the truth. In reality the truth that any photograph speaks is that which the photographer chooses to tell. A photograph is neither truth nor fiction. It is simply a glimpse at a slice of time, as seen through the eyes of the artist. My photographs are simply a representation of my view of the world around me. My truth. My vision.

I’m particularly drawn to observing and photographing the wild horses which live along the coast of North Carolina. I find these animals beautiful, their behavior fascinating. I hope my photography provides some insight into their lives and their personalities. However my photography is not limited to these horses only. For my entire life I’ve been a lover of the outdoors… an explorer of natural places. In nature I find beauty which I wish to share with others. I find myself drawn to textures, shapes and patterns found in wild places. As a lover of animals I seek to capture them photographically, to get to know them more intimately. As an explorer, a traveler along life’s path, I use my photographs to share my journey, vision and discoveries along the way.
