Caterpillar: This is an Odd Looking Creature

I’d spotted and interesting bloom along the road and stop to take some photos when I noticed this exotci looking beast feeding on a fern. I just had to try to take a few shots of it. Bugs and such are my usual subject and I don’t really have a feel for how to compose them, but here goes anyway.

A caterpillar in the Croatan National Forest.

This is an exotic looking beast.

I don't usually shoot bugs.

I presume this thing will evolve into some kind of butterfly.

    Is this a catapillar or related to catapillers? Would this be dangerous? My friend one of these in Deerfield Indiana.
