Autumn at the Island Creek Walk

The Island Creek Walk trail is found between Pollocksville and New Bern North Carolina. This unique area of the Croatan National Forest has predominately deciduous forest. Another unusual feature for the NC Coastal plain is the presence of limestone outcroppings. The combination makes for a lovely experience for those visiting the trail.

Officially the trail is a short 1/4 mile loop. Until a couple years ago there were blazes and maps available providing a variety of trails and allowing for some very nice long day hikes. It seems a local club out of New Bern blazed and mapped the trails without Forest Service permission. the NFS deemed that the trails endangered some “archeologically significant sights” and removed all the blazes and maps. I imagine one can do a little googling and find images of the map. Just be aware that there will be no markings along the way. Obviously the best advice is to stick to the official, marked trail. But I’m sure there are those that push beyond.

The following are some photos of a recent visit to Island Creek. It is a lovely location in the Fall but I also like it in the Spring. It’s nice to find something close to home a bit different than the typical pine forest and beach so common around here.
