Wild Horses from the April 14/15 Workshop

The emphasis of the Wild Horses of the Crystal Coast workshop was obviously on the horses living along Shackleford Banks and with the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. While it’s not unusual to snap a few shots of birds, horses are the main attraction. Below are a few more of my shot from the weekend.

Wild horse can be found on the dunes, in the maritime forest, along the beach and on the tidal flats.

Shackleford Banks Seagulls

It’s all too easy to overlook seagulls when making nature photographs. After all, along the coast they seem almost omni-presents. They’re almost everywhere. Even so there are a variety of different gulls and they can make interesting photographic subjects. Here is a Laughing Gull and a Ringbill Gull photographed while waiting on pick-up from Shackleford Banks. Often times the best tactic for photographing shore birds is to take a seat along the beach, stay reasonably quiet and still, and to allow them to come to you.

Not Only Wild Horses

While the focus of last weekend was on photographing wild horses other opportunities did present themselves. For example, while waiting on the boat to pick us up we had several interesting shorebirds stroll past. Below is one of my shots taken on Shackleford Banks while waiting for a ride.

Wild Horse photography workshops often present opportunities to photograph interesting shorebirds as well.

A Bit Tired But What a Workshop Weekend!

There’s no doubt that this weeked was tiring. I spent the weekend leading the Horses of the Crystal Coast. We spent Saturday exploring the eastern end of Shackleford Banks. It took a bit of hiking to find some Wild Spanish Mustangs but find them we did. We spent the morning exploring the tidal flats and marsh photographing the wild horses. We took a break for a couple of hours to refuel in one of the local resturants then returned to the island to explore along the beach and in the dunes for more photographic opportunities. We covered a lot of ground and I’m sure we all were feeling it a little by the end of the day. But a little effort frequently required when photographing wild creaters in their natural habitat.

For the Sunday portion of the workshop we visited the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. Simply put, it was a horse rich environment. At one point we had 20 horses together providing plenty of photographic opportunities. Romance was in the air and there were moments of a bit of sparring and posturing mixed in a a lot of calm, quiet periods. It was, without question, a very productive morning.

Many thanks to to Blake, Carolina, Kelson and Gail… the workshop participants. I hope you captured some wonderful images and long-lived memories.

Below is one of my shots from the weekend. I’m sure I’ll post some more in the not too distant future.

Sometimes Conditions Force a Change of Game Plans

My alarm went off well before sunrise yesterday morning. As I pulled myself out of a sleepy state the first thing I did was look out the windows to see how the morning was shaping up. I could see my home was surrounded by a heavy fog. Foggy conditions really weren’t going to be condusive to the photography I’d planned for the morning so I decided to crawl back in bed for a couple hours and wait to see if the fog would burn off.

When I got up the second time the fog was gone but the skies were hidden by heavy, white overcast. This type of sky really doesn’t provide the look I had in mind for my target subject. Rather than blowing off the entire morning I made an adjustment in my plans to better fit the conditions. I realized that things just weren’t condusive for making photos of anything that would include the shy. Landscapes, large animal portraits and birds in flight, many of my favorite photography targets, weren’t really good options for the day. Instead I’d be better off concentrating on subjects that would exclude the sky.

If I could locate some interesting subjects it would be a good morning for macro photography. Since I’d gotten off to a late start I decided to stay close to home… back yard close! A little survey of the area and I found a few subjects I thought might be interesting. Spring is early and life is starting to blossom, bloom and explode in the plant world. I found these maple tree seed pods that were colorful and that had interesting textures.

When skies are bland a better plan is to concentrate on macro subjects.

More Wild Horses on the High Dunes

A couple more shots from a recent trip to the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve. I found these wild horses feeding atop some high dunes.

Neusiok Trail Report

I paid a visit to the Neusiok Trail a couple days ago. Starting at the trailhead at the Pine Cliff Recreation Area, I hiked to the Copperhead Landing camping shelter and back. That’s roughly a 7 mile round trip. I was thrilled to see tha the Forest Service and volunteers such as the Carteret County Wildlife Club had done a wonderful job of clearing the trail from downed trees, rerouting the trail where needed and replacing missing blazes. The Neusiok Trail has been restored to one of the primier outdoor opportunities along the crystal coast.

Ooops! Night Heron Repost

Yesterday morning I did a post on Black Crowned Night Herons. Unfortunately my site host was making a nameserver change and that post got lost in the migration. Basically I mentioned stopping by my Night Heron hot-spot on the way bac from my wild horse photo outing. That day there were over twenty of the Night Herons roosing in the trees along with several Tri-color Herons, White Ibis and other birds. Below are the images included with that post.
