More Wild Horses

Here are a couple more shots from yesterday morning. If I’m not careful I forget to shoot any vertical photos of the wild horses. While the landscape format can be excellent for showing off these magnificant animals, verticals can be nice too. I hope you enjoy.

Wild Horses on the High Dunes

I made a trip over to Carrot Island this morning. Currently the horses are spread out into small groups scattered about the reserve. This presents a nice opportuninty to get some images of the horses in some environments where I haven’t photographed them before. I’d seen some horses on the high dunes a few times when kayaking on shorebird expeditions. I also knew that the grass found on these dunes might be nutritionally preferable for the animals this time of year. Here are a couple shots from the outing.

A clash of two eras... wild horses, decendants of livestock left behind by early explorers contrasted against a modern ship in the background.

Sometimes Life Gets in the Way

It seems a bit of a cliche but it’s true, sometimes life gets in the way. Several weeks ago I made a change in part time employment. I happened to time it just as my new employer experienced a shortage of employees. Because of that timing my “part-time” job has been occupying me 6 and 7 days a week! That doesn’t exactly leave a lot of time for getting out a shooting. Plus, when I do get out it doesn’t leave a lot of time for post processing the resulting images. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. In these challenging times having work is a really good thing. As things ease up a little I’ll be working up some of the photos I have in queue waiting to be processed as well as getting back out and making new imagery. Below is a shot from a few weeks ago. Hope you enjoy it.

Snowy Egret on a Winter’s Day

During my last kayak photography outing I came across a reasonably cooperative Snowy Egret. Here’s a couple shots from the encounter.

More Wet & Wild Horses

Here are a few more shots of the horses crossing from island to island the other day.

Wet & Wild Horses

I finally had a chance to go for my first paddle of the new year. When paddling at high tide my goal is to find shore birds to photograph. However, sometimes I come across some horses on a shoal or along the shore. If I really get lucky I happen upon some horses moving from one land mass to another. Here are a few images of some wild horses making a crossing.

Common Loon

I finally got a chance to get out and make my first paddle of the new year! The skies were overcast, which is usually a good thing for photography. In this case, however, they were so overcast that I was forced to shoot at a higher ISO setting than I normally like to. Near the end of my paddle I encountered a very cooperative Common Loon. Below are a few photos of this bird.

Rachel Carson Reserve Horses

While visiting the reserve the morning before Christmas I made a few photographs of a stallion and his one mare. At the moment the herd is broken up into individual bands called harems. The harems consist of a stallion and a mare or two or three. There also may be a bachlor band around which would be made up of stallions that haven’t “collected” any mares. With the herd split into smaller groups it can make locating horses to photograph a little more challenging. Here’s a few shots from the morning.
